Content

The Prairie grain AI cluster is the substantive Canadian regional value-chain cluster for grains, protein, and digital agriculture. Spans three sub-clusters across Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba.

Three Prairie sub-clusters

Sub-cluster 1 — Saskatoon grain AI cluster (Saskatchewan). Anchored by Super GeoAI Technology Inc. (Dr. Weiping Zeng) and VeriGrain. The 100-year-old grain grading process is the legacy that the Saskatoon cluster challenges. Super GeoAI Phase 2 launched Android + iOS apps with several hundred farmer downloads; expanded to Canola + peas; integration with VeriGrain. Outcome: 28 → 40 employees. Raven Industries (Regina SK) OMNiPOWER autonomous agriculture; Mojow Autonomous Solutions (White City SK) autonomous farm tools. University of Saskatchewan Crop Development Centre (Pea Genomic Selection Platform).

Sub-cluster 2 — Winnipeg/Steinbach/Vermilion protein AI cluster (Manitoba + Alberta). Anchored by MacDon Industries (Winnipeg MB) — the largest single CAAIN-funded project at $3.84M CAAIN / $9.26M total (Harvesting Automation header AI). mode40 (Steinbach MB) carcass cooling AI — ISED Challenge → CAAIN → AAFC Lacombe → 10 commercial plant validation. Lakeland College (Vermilion AB) Precision Ranching spans AB + MB + BC.

Sub-cluster 3 — Calgary/Lethbridge/Olds digital agriculture cluster (Alberta). Anchored by Ox + Plow Ag (Calgary AB) digital marketplace for livestock feed procurement; SmartGro Bioengineering (Calgary AB) horticultural lighting AI; PIP International (Lethbridge AB) circular AgTech ecosystem; Metabolomics Innovations + AltaML (Lake Newell Resort AB) SOIL-HUB data coordination centre; AUAV Tech (Calgary AB) A.U.G. Signals DSI partner; Olds College Smart Farm EarthDaily × Syngenta invasive threats partner.

Cross-cluster funding pattern

Saskatoon grain AI — substantive details

Dr. Weiping Zeng (PhD University of Alberta 2002+, faculty University of Saskatchewan) is a substantive academic entrepreneur: Super GeoAI was founded January 18, 2020. CAAIN funding “served as a lifeline” in late 2021. Outcome: 28 full-time employees by late 2024, target 40 by early 2025. Phase 2 launched Android + iOS apps. Expanded to Canola + peas. Integration with VeriGrain.

The VeriGrain sampling technology (Saskatoon SK) is the grain-sampling partner. Together the two Saskatoon companies “bring the grain industry into the 21st century and stop relying on inconsistent, subjective approaches to assessing grain value.”

Raven Industries (Regina SK) brings OMNiPOWER autonomous agriculture — the company’s driver-optional agricultural power platform.

Mojow Autonomous Solutions (White City SK) — autonomous farm tools, active 2026.

Winnipeg / Steinbach protein AI — substantive details

MacDon Industries (Winnipeg MB) is the world’s largest header manufacturer. The CAAIN-funded Harvesting Automation project addresses the highly skilled labour shortage for combine harvester operators. AI automates harvest header control.

mode40 (Steinbach MB) is the AI carcass cooling pioneer. Developed in response to an Innovation Solutions Canada Challenge. After MVP, mode40 moved to AAFC’s Lacombe Research and Development Centre for further development, then 1-year validation in 10 commercial meat processing plants. The mode40 development path (ISED Challenge → CAAIN → AAFC Lacombe → commercial plants) is the full Canadian development pathway for federally-supported AI ventures.

Lakeland College (Vermilion AB) uses rumen bolus, GPS ear tags, ultrasound, and LlamaZOO (BC-based software company) for digital twin dashboard. Industry partners pay for the technology but recover 40% of costs through CAAIN funding. Lakeland’s Agricultural Technology degree programme is the workforce pipeline.

Calgary / Lethbridge / Olds digital ag — substantive details

A.U.G. Signals + AUAV Tech — broadacre drought severity index at 20m regional and 3.5m field-level scales. Sentinel-2/3 + Landsat-8/9 + drones + agroclimatic + soil moisture + CID handheld spectrometers. Four-year window: 2021, 2025, 2026, 2027.

SmartGro Bioengineering (Calgary AB) — horticultural lighting AI ($738K CAAIN / $6.41M total). Distinct from Sollum (existing Quebec cycle scan); SmartGro is Alberta-anchored.

PIP International (Lethbridge AB) — circular AgTech ecosystem.

Metabolomics Innovations + AltaML (Lake Newell Resort AB) — SOIL-HUB data coordination centre.

What this unit is doing in the taxonomy

This is the Prairie regional value-chain substrate unit. Anchors:

Why it matters for talks

  1. The Prairie cluster has three sub-clusters — Saskatoon grain AI, Winnipeg/Steinbach/Vermilion protein AI, Calgary/Lethbridge/Olds digital ag. Distinct from the BC horticulture cluster and the Ontario dairy/cereal cluster.
  2. MacDon Industries’ $9.26M is the largest single CAAIN-funded project. Substantive scale anchor.
  3. The 100-year-old grain grading process is the legacy that the Saskatoon cluster challenges (Super GeoAI + VeriGrain).
  4. The mode40 development path (ISED Challenge → CAAIN → AAFC Lacombe → commercial plants) is the full Canadian development pathway for federally-supported AI ventures.
  5. The CAAIN funding as the leveller (“served as a lifeline for us at a time when our future was uncertain” — Weiping Zeng) is the substantive federal validation funding framing.
  6. The cross-cluster funding pattern (CAAIN + PIC + Scale AI + Digital across Prairie leads) is the Canadian structural feature.
