The Open Ag Data Alliance (OADA) is an open-source software project to bring farmer-centered interoperability, security, and privacy to agricultural data. Distinct from a cooperative (no membership); distinct from a certification body (no commercial seal); distinct from a vendor (no commercial product). OADA is a standards project.
Core mission (verbatim)
“OADA will create a secure data ecosystem that enables data security, privacy and interoperability for the entire agriculture industry. OADA will achieve this through an open standards software effort to establish secure data exchange protocols.”

What OADA explicitly is not

This is structurally important. OADA is non-commercial, non-lobbying, non-vendor. It is the standards layer that vendor implementations could adopt to enable interoperability.
The OADA Approach to Interoperability
“The OADA approach to interoperability is to avoid implementation frameworks that inherently dictate winners and losers, focusing instead on providing developers with the useful libraries they need in order to communicate and access data without spending tedious hours memorizing several monolithic standards.”
OADA explicitly draws on the Internet / Web standards tradition: IETF, W3C, Apache Foundation. The model: open specifications, vendor implementations, no commercial lock-in.
The OADA API Specification
An early draft of the API specification using the API specification language RAML is on GitHub. Future API capabilities include:
- Searching (basic metadata searches, spatial queries within field boundaries)
- Synchronization among clouds
- Streaming to support capabilities such as writing and retrieving data in chunks
- Alerting of events such as arrival of new data so farmer’s prescription can be updated
The verification suite is automated and can be run on a repeated basis to measure compliance with the OADA API specification.
Distinct from Ag Data Transparent
Worth being explicit: Ag Data Transparent is contract transparency certification (vendor commits to farmer-friendly contract terms). OADA is technical interoperability standards (vendor implements open API specifications). These are complementary but distinct.
The Three-Layer Data Commons Architecture

The three layers are complementary. A complete data commons infrastructure would have all three.
Critical observation
OADA’s “distributed, rather than centralized, network model” framing is structurally distinct from the centralized alternatives. The centralized alternatives (vendor platforms, even cooperative platforms) concentrate data flow; the distributed model (where each farmer’s data lives with their chosen providers, exchangeable via open APIs) keeps data distributed and farmer-controlled.
