Mila — Quebec Artificial Intelligence Institute is the Quebec node of Canada’s Pan-Canadian AI Strategy (PCAIS), co-founded by Yoshua Bengio at Université de Montréal. Mila’s “AI for Humanity” applied-projects portfolio includes agriculture as one of eight named application domains, alongside health, climate, environment, smart infrastructure, transportation, education, and ethics.
The substantive corpus clarification — DISA is in Rwanda, not Canada
The corpus’s scans/2026-07-quebec-cycle.md line 99 references Mila’s DISA project (“Data-driven Insights for Sustainable Agriculture”) and the gap G-029 asks about “Mila DISA partner farms and concrete deployed acreage” — with the implication that this is a Canadian agrifood deployment.
Primary-source correction: DISA is not a Canadian-deployed project. Per Mila’s primary-source page on DISA: DISA is “an interdisciplinary project that leverages the power of machine learning, satellite imagery, local knowledge and human-centred collaborations to promote an alternative approach to farming called regenerative agriculture” — and “our scope is initially focused on the Rwandan context, the objective is to scale the project in multiple countries across the continent.” The model is: Canadian AI research capacity, Rwandan deployment (and broader Africa).
DISA’s substantive design:
- Five-organisation collaboration: Sustainability in the Digital Age (SDA), Future Earth, Planet (high-resolution satellite imagery provider), CIFOR-ICRAF, Mila.
- Mila’s role: algorithms using Planet’s high-resolution satellite imagery to identify regenerative and non-regenerative agricultural practices at scale in Rwanda.
- Local collaborators: Regional Research Center for Integrated Development (RCID) Rwanda + Bridge2Rwanda + McGill Mastercard Foundation Scholars’ Program + ClimateWorks Foundation.

This is a high-quality applied-research project but not Canadian farmland. G-029 should be reframed: Mila + Planet + CIFOR-ICRAF + Future Earth + SDA is a Canadian-research-pipelined Rwandan-deployment team; the substantive agrifood-AI finding is the method (satellite + ML for regenerative-ag identification at scale), not Canadian partner-farm acreage.
IVADO — Quebec academic AI institute
IVADO (Institut de valorisation des données / Institute for Data Valorization) is Mila’s sister institute, jointly run by Université de Montréal, HEC Montréal, and Polytechnique Montréal. IVADO’s signature research scope is data science + AI + optimization + statistics with applications across health, transportation, social sciences, and agriculture (R3AI).
R3AI — Responsible AI for Regenerative Agriculture has been the most-named IVADO agrifood positioning. Innovasea partnership
A second Mila agrifood-adjacent project surfaced in 2025: Innovasea (aquaculture technology vendor) partnered with Mila to advance AI-powered fish farming. Per LinkedIn / Feed and Additive coverage (May 2025): “Innovasea partners with Mila to advance AI-powered [fish farming].” This is a Canadian-vendor + Quebec-academic partnership on aquaculture AI — substantively Canadian, with Mila supplying ML and Innovasea supplying the operational deployment context.
This is one of the few documented Canadian academic-vendor partnerships at the Quebec-AI × aquaculture intersection. Worth tracking as a substantive Quebec-academic agrifood AI deployment (small but real).
Quebec academic-agrifood context
The Quebec academic-AI agrifood substrate beyond Mila + IVADO includes:
- Université Laval — Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences; precision agriculture research; not specifically AI-institute-tier.
- McGill University — MacDonald Campus (Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue); School of Human Nutrition; Faculty of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences; biological digital twin research (overlapping topic with Neethirajan at Dalhousie).
