Loblaw PC Express in ChatGPT — first-of-its-kind grocery shopping app inside a generative AI surface

On February 12, 2026, Loblaw Companies Limited launched the PC Express app in ChatGPT — the first grocery shopping app integrated directly inside OpenAI’s ChatGPT surface.
The product uses conversational AI to help Canadians explore menu ideas, curate ingredients, and select products from their local Loblaw store. Loblaw’s own framing positions this as the company “solidifying [its] position as a North American leader in artificial intelligence (AI) innovation within the retail sector.”
The deployment extends beyond consumer-facing surface. Loblaw is also equipping corporate colleagues with ChatGPT Enterprise, and has prior internal deployment of proprietary AI solutions built on OpenAI models — including Robin (an AI-powered assistant for store owners and managers) and agentic solutions in supply chain management for inventory accuracy and logistics.
What this unit is doing in the taxonomy
This is the first populated entry in the consumption × all × all cell of the matrix, which was named as a near-total gap in the Canadian regional scan (G-006). Loblaw × ChatGPT is also the highest-profile consumer-facing generative AI deployment in Canadian agrifood as of mid-2026.
Why it matters for talks
- Concrete example of generative AI reaching the consumption end of the agrifood chain, against a backdrop of broad Canadian AI strategy silence on consumption.
- Anchors a slide on the “consumer-facing generative AI in agrifood” cell of any talk matrix.
- Useful as a contrast point for the China × Global South scan — where the deployment pattern is voice-first / low-literacy for smallholder contexts; here it’s the inverse: standard-smartphone, English / French / bilingual, design assumptions for the well-resourced consumer.
Critical context the unit does not sanitise
Loblaw is deploying consumer-facing AI while under significant Canadian public scrutiny around grocery pricing. The company’s own Real Talk page (loblaw.ca/en/real-talk-why-are-food-prices-still-rising/) is a direct response to that scrutiny. AI deployment in retail happens against the political backdrop of food affordability; the technology is not separable from that context for public-education purposes.
