JD.com’s JD Farm initiative uses IoT, AI, and blockchain in vertically integrated deployments across Chinese agriculture. As of November 2019, 17 smart agriculture projects had been set up in partnership with farms across China, including a peach farm in Shandong and a pear farm in Hebei that reportedly increased average prices by 30–50% over prior offline sales.
The JD Digits fintech arm extends the same architecture into livestock with machine vision, AI-enabled analytics, robots, and IoT — including facial recognition for individualised pig feeding plans and the broader Stockbreeding intelligent solution. NYT (2019) reported China-wide deployment of pig facial recognition across multiple vendors including JD and Alibaba affiliates.
The deployment model is vertically integrated — JD provides the platform, the IoT infrastructure, the AI, the marketplace, and the logistics network. Farmers gain access to JD’s customer base and traceability features; consumers gain supply-chain provenance. This is structurally distinct from Alibaba’s cloud-mediated ET Agricultural Brain model.

- JD Farm’s smallholder interface runs through smartphones and JD’s app; the deployment does not address low-literacy or feature-phone contexts.
