JBS — Brazilian beef processor 100%-indirect-supplier blockchain monitoring target (2025) + COP-28 Para traceability

South-America (Brazil origin; multi-continent exporter)

JBS S.A. — the world’s largest beef processor and Brazil’s flagship cattle-industry corporate — committed in September 2020 to monitor 100% of its indirect cattle suppliers by 2025, using blockchain and other digital tools as the substrate. The pledge was made explicitly in response to Reuters and Greenpeace Unearthed reporting on Amazon-cattle supply-chain traceability gaps. JBS also made a $9 million investment at COP-28 (Dubai, December 2023) to support mandatory traceability in Pará state and improve livelihoods of small producers in the Amazon region.

Documented scope (per JBS corporate and trade press through 2020-2025):

The mechanism, per JBS corporate framing:

Verifying the 100% commitment — what’s actually achieved?

Per Greenpeace Unearthed (July 2022): JBS commits to monitoring “100% of indirect suppliers by 2025” but the actual deployment as of 2022 was largely confined to the direct-supplier tier. The 2025 target was a future commitment. As of mid-2026, independent auditing of whether JBS has achieved the 2025 target has not surfaced in public sources. The corporate side maintains the commitment is in progress; the critical-voice side maintains the gap remains.

Per Mighty Earth Rapid Response #7 (April 2026): JBS bought cattle from two farms linked to nearly 1,400 hectares of deforestation in the Amazon rainforest in 2025 — direct adversarial evidence that JBS’s supply chain still contains embedded-deforestation cattle after the 2025 target date. This is the corpus’s clearest single-source critical-voice evidence that JBS’s traceability programme did not achieve its 2025 target by the announced date.

Cross-verification tier:

JBS global presence: JBS USA is the corpus’s already-documented sister entity (e.g., jbs-usa-volur-carcass-sorting.md documents JBS USA’s beef cut-plan AI at Hyrum, UT, in a 6-month POV announced January 2023). JBS Brazil (this unit) is the procurement-side AI deployment; JBS USA is the processing-line AI deployment — sibling Brazilian-and-American corporate operations with structurally distinct AI deployment shapes.

What this unit is doing in the taxonomy

Pairs with and complements:

Functionally-distinct from NA beef AI (cargill-carve-meat-processing.md etc.) on the same dimension Minerva is distinct: NA beef AI is processing-line; Brazilian beef AI (JBS including) is procurement-side. The JBS-Miraflores dual deployment is structurally coherent — JBS’s Brazilian operations lead on supply-chain AI; JBS’s USA operations lead on processing-line AI.
