Digital Technology Supercluster (DIGITAL) — Natural Resources & Agriculture portfolio with AI for Aquaculture as the Indigenous-knowledge-integrated anchor
NA-Canada (BC-anchored, national; Ontario, BC, Quebec, Atlantic)
Content
The Digital Technology Supercluster (DTC / DIGITAL) is the BC-anchored Global Innovation Cluster. One of the five Canadian Global Innovation Clusters. The Digital “Natural Resources & Agriculture” project filter lists 20+ projects.
Verified Digital Natural Resources & Agriculture projects (subset surfaced):
Already-named leads appearing in Digital Natural Resources & Agriculture:
- Verge Ag — Optimizing Agricultural Operations with Quantum Computing + Standard Data Platform for Autonomous Agriculture.
- Vivid Machines — Transforming Fruit Production + Apples to All: Growing an AI-Enabled Agricultural Data Platform.
- Terramera — Precision Agriculture to Improve Crop Health.
- Agi3 Ltd. — AI-Enabled Enterprise Risk Management for the Agriculture Sector.
- EarthDaily Analytics — Earth Data Store + Satellite-based Environmental Analytics + Detecting and Treating Invasive Threats (with Syngenta Canada + Olds College).
- Koonkie Canada — Multi-lens Ecological Restoration Monitoring and Forecasting.
- Carl Data Solutions — Fresh Water Data Commons.
- MDA — Protecting Our Oceans.
- Mosaic Forest Management — Forest Machine Connectivity.
- Novamera — Surgical Mining + Data Driven Surgical Mining.
- Ideon Technologies — Subsurface Intelligence UCM + Earth X-ray for Low-Impact Mining.
- Agnico Eagle Mines — AI-Driven Core Scanning & Assessments.
- Teck Resources — Mining Microbiome Analytics Platform.
- Seafarer AI — PORT WATCH: AI-Powered Underwater and Surface Monitoring.
The substantively important Digital project for Canadian agrifood AI is AI for Aquaculture (covered separately as a value-chain unit candidate in the deepening scout §11A.3).
AI for Aquaculture (Excel Career College). Project Lead: Excel Career College. Partners: BC Salmon Farmers Association, Comox Valley Chamber of Commerce, Vancouver Island First Nations and regional development organizations. Funding stream: Digital Talent & Connectivity pillar. Updated June 5 2025. Distinctive feature: programme explicitly combines traditional knowledge and traditional Indigenous knowledge with training on AI/ML/IoT and digital skills. Targets oyster farming, salmon hatcheries, fish processing. Includes scaling blueprint for Canada-wide. “Participants will gain skills to optimize fish health, improve water quality, and enhance operational efficiency through the usage of AI and digital technologies.”
This is the only documented Canadian aquaculture AI programme with explicit Indigenous-knowledge integration. The Digital Talent & Connectivity pillar framing (workforce training) is the operative framing — it is a training programme, not a deployment project per se.
Cross-cluster pattern (substantive)
The Digital-Scale AI overlap is structural:
- Vivid Machines — Digital + Scale AI (Transforming Fruit Production + Apples to All on Digital; same projects funded under Scale AI).
- Terramera — Digital + Scale AI (Precision Agriculture to Improve Crop Health).
- Agi3 Ltd. — Digital + Scale AI (AI-Enabled Enterprise Risk Management for the Agriculture Sector).
- Verge Ag — Digital + Scale AI (Standard Data Platform for Autonomous Agriculture).
- EarthDaily Analytics — Digital + Scale AI (Earth Data Store on Digital; Detecting and Treating Invasive Threats with Syngenta Canada + Olds College on Scale AI).
At least 5 named leads appear in both Digital and Scale AI. Same companies, multiple federal funding streams. This is a substantive observation: Canada’s cluster programme architecture allows a single company to stack federal funding across clusters.
What this unit is doing in the taxonomy
This is the Digital Technology Supercluster layer of the federal funder/convenor substrate for Canadian agrifood AI. It anchors:
- Every other Canadian unit that cites a Digital Natural Resources & Agriculture project (Vivid Machines, Terramera, Agi3, Verge Ag, EarthDaily).
- The CAAIN portfolio unit (
caain-portfolio-canada.md) is the federal third-party delivery counterpart. - The RAII unit (
raii-canada-ai-adoption-programme.md) is the regional-delivery counterpart. - The Scale AI unit (
scale-ai-agriculture-canada.md) is the parallel Global Innovation Cluster counterpart — same federal architecture, different cluster. - The AI for Aquaculture training programme is the corpus anchor for the only documented Indigenous-knowledge-integrated Canadian aquaculture AI programme.
Why it matters for talks
- DIGITAL is the BC-anchored Global Innovation Cluster with 20+ Natural Resources & Agriculture projects. A talk can name Digital alongside Scale AI as a substantive federal cluster programme with agrifood deployment.
- The cross-cluster funding pattern (5+ leads in both Digital and Scale AI) is a substantive Canadian structural feature. Talks can name this as the corpus-level observation.
- AI for Aquaculture is the only documented Canadian aquaculture AI programme with explicit Indigenous-knowledge integration. This is a structurally distinct Canadian feature — Indian Knowledge + AI is operational in workforce training even when not in deployed commercial products.
- The Talent & Connectivity pillar framing (workforce training) is a distinct federal strategy vector — complements CAAIN’s TRL 7+ validation focus and Scale AI’s industry-led projects focus.
- Multi-lens Ecological Restoration Monitoring (Koonkie Canada) is a Digital project that intersects with agrifood AI (agricultural ecosystem restoration as an agrifood adjacency).
- Fresh Water Data Commons (Carl Data Solutions) is a Digital data-infrastructure project with direct agrifood-water-relevance.
Critical context
- The cross-cluster pattern is real but its magnitude is uncertain. Whether the dual-cluster funding is additive (two streams fund different deployment milestones) or substitutive (one stream ends, the other starts) is project-by-project.
- AI for Aquaculture is a workforce-training programme, not a deployment project. The substantive deployment projects are the Excel Career College programme’s trainees. The aquaculture deployment itself happens in the field (Mowi Feed Centre, DFO pilots, WellFish, ReelData, OnDeck).
- Vivid Machines, Terramera, Agi3, Verge Ag, and EarthDaily all appear in both Digital and Scale AI. This is the Canadian federal cluster architecture’s distinctive feature.
- Digital is BC-anchored but the projects span BC, Ontario, Quebec, Prairies, Atlantic. No Northern territories (YT/NWT/NU) Digital projects surfaced in scouting.
- Digital’s Natural Resources & Agriculture filter also includes mining projects (Surgical Mining, Subsurface Intelligence, Mining Microbiome Analytics). The filter is broader than agrifood; only the agrifood-relevant projects are surfaced here.
