Nectar Technologies Inc. (Montréal QC) is the first documented Canadian AI beekeeping deployment. The CAAIN-funded project — Prescriptive Beekeeping: Leveraging Artificial Intelligence to Automate the Management of a Beekeeping Operation to Maximize Honeybee Colony Survival Rates and Business Profitability — was completed September 30 2025 with $732,353 CAAIN contribution against $2,276,554 total project value.

Description. “The objective of this project is to develop, deploy, and test a data-driven tool leveraging artificial intelligence that will automate the management of commercial beekeeping operations in a field setting. The tool will automate the prescription and prioritization of tasks and routes according to the outcome on annual honeybee colony survival rates and business profitability.”

The BeeTrack platform

Nectar’s BeeTrack traceability platform is the underlying data infrastructure. The CAAIN-funded AI tool is the prescriptive layer on top of BeeTrack — automating task and route prescription.

Deployment scale. Nectar’s customers operate 4,000+ hives (some operations up to 9,000). The AI tool is deployed at commercial apiarists operating at this scale.

Three impact steps (per Marc-André Roberge interview)

  1. Supporting the apiarists whose pollinators are essential to the success of certain types of crop. Help them remain profitable so they can keep providing pollination services.
  2. Steady bee supply for fruit/vegetable producers. For example, blueberry quantity and quality increase substantially when bees are involved in pollination.
  3. Best practices for hive health. Recommending best practices that will ensure healthy hives.

The migration logic

Apiarists move hives across regions. In Quebec: from blueberry farms to strawberry producers. In Alberta: between canola fields. Commercial beekeeping is migratory — bees constantly exposed to different climatic conditions. The AI tool prescribes tasks and routes based on this migration logic.
