Agroecology ↔ open source: correlation structure (cross-repo note)

Last reviewed: 2026-08-12 Method: mapping scan — reads existing field-guide agroecology-relevant units against the open-source idiom; not a discovery scan for new units. Produced by the G-OSA-24 cycle in opensource-agrifood/. This note feeds a correlation-structure reading into the field guide’s protected-cultivation / openness axis; it does not replace any existing unit.

Why this note exists

The field guide has substantive agroecology content — units/open-source-ai-agrifood-quantitative-panel.md names agroecology as the AI-deployment contrast case; units/canadian-indigenous-data-sovereignty-agrifood.md carries the Ruder-Wittman data-governance critical voice and Wittman’s Land governance for agroecology (Elementa 2022); the EU institutional/funder scan names the agroecology partnership as a Horizon Europe Cluster 6 co-funded partnership. But the field guide does not yet have a unit or note that asks the question this project is built around: when does “open source” strengthen agroecology’s farmer/peasant-agency and anti-enclosure goals, and when does it dilute or misfire? This note is the start of that answer, drawn from the G-OSA-24 correlation scan.

Headline (from G-OSA-24 scan)

The correlation between agroecology and open source is sub-domain-dependent, not uniform. Four shapes, strongest to weakest:

  1. Open-source seed as a deliberate bridge — OSSI pledge, OSSL licence, Bioleft (Argentina, participatory seed commons + open data) all explicitly marry a commons/open-source idiom to seed biology as an agroecological anti-enclosure tool. The Sievers-Glotzbach et al. (2020) Seed Commons criteria (collective responsibility, protection from enclosure, collective polycentric management, knowledge sharing; CC BY 4.0) are the closest conceptual bridge between a commons/open-source idiom and agroecology’s seed-sovereignty current. Tension: OSSI pledge has uptake without enforcement; OSSL has contractual teeth with no located enforcement case (this project’s G-OSA-21); the pledge-vs-licence trade-off is the live sub-question.

  2. Open-source machinery/tool design as a structural but fragile bridge — L’Atelier Paysan (France, SCIC cooperative, 2009–2026, judicially liquidated April 2026; successor structures Communs Paysans + Soudons, fermes! attempting to protect the design assets from commercial appropriation) is the strongest located case of farmer-governed open hardware for agroecology; Farm Hack (US/UK, FAO agroecology knowledge hub record, peer design-sharing, candidate) is the looser decentralized counterpart; Open Source Ecology (GPL/CC-BY-SA tractor/machinery set) is the open-hardware engine but not agroecology-specific; Think Oggún is the inverse (an “open system” manufacturing model with a 5-year paid licence fee). Tension: the L’Atelier Paysan liquidation is the fragility finding — governance-model strength does not solve funding/maintenance (this project’s G-OSA-08); whether the design commons survives the liquidation intact, and under what terms, is unresolved as of 2026-08-12.

  3. Open-source digital farm infrastructure as a partial, contested bridge — REGOSH’s Open Agroecology Lab (Argentina, farmOS + SurveyStack + open sensing collaborations, co-designed data governance, Shuttleworth-funded, activity documented 2018–2023, post-2023 activity unverified) is the strongest located case of an open-source digital infrastructure deliberately built for agroecological knowledge systematization; LiteFarm and farmOS extend the thread. Tension: IPES-Food’s “Head in the Cloud” (Feb 2026) frames digital agriculture as an enclosure vector — “over 70% of agrifood innovations were digitally delivered,” platforms “standardize and digitize farming knowledge” — and names commons, gift economies, and open-source frameworks as the counter-current, but situates open-source farm software inside a critique of digital enclosure, not as the dominant force. The correlation is real at the design layer; whether it delivers knowledge sovereignty at the deployment layer is unresolved.

  4. Institutional agroecology does not speak “open source” — The AGROECOLOGY European Partnership (Horizon Europe Cluster 6, three co-funded calls closed 2024–2026, agroecology living labs + research infrastructures, member-state co-funding) surfaces no open-source, commons, or licensing framing in its public materials; the framing is living labs, research infrastructures, value-chain/policy assessment, genetic diversity, farmer empowerment — cooperative and participatory methods, but not “open source” as a term or instrument. FAO’s scaling-up paper (2020) names “open source data and technology” as one element, but FAO’s 10-element framework and HLPE do not center open source. This absence is itself evidence: the institutional agroecology current does not naturally speak “open source”; the two movements overlap at practice and knowledge-exchange but not at vocabulary or funding instrument.

A fifth axis that the correlation does not bridge

Knowledge sovereignty / Indigenous and peasant knowledge overlaps with open-source commons but is not expressed in open-source licensing terms. The field guide’s units/canadian-indigenous-data-sovereignty-agrifood.md is the substantive unit here: CARE Principles, OCAP®, FNDGS, IEEE 2890-2025, NISR, IQ — these are data-governance and knowledge-sovereignty frameworks that do not map onto open-source licensing vocabulary (free, open, forkability, commons). Agroecology’s vocabulary (food sovereignty, peasant, territory, La Via Campesina) similarly does not map onto open-source vocabulary. Potato Park’s customary biocultural governance (this project’s record) is a distinct commons shape from OSSI/OSSL. The correlation between agroecology’s knowledge-sovereignty current and open-source’s forkability/commons current is not resolved by anything in the record — Prager (2021) “open source agriculture” is the closest general-frame reference and is not agroecology-specific.

What the field guide already has that maps to this correlation

What the field guide does NOT yet have

  1. A short unit or noteunits/agroecology-open-source-correlation.md (this file, adapted) — that carries the four-shape correlation structure and the vocabulary-mismatch tension as a protected cross-cutting note, with the IPES-Food and AGROECOLOGY Partnership current-state references and the Sievers-Glotzbach and Prager conceptual anchors. This would be the field guide’s first dedicated agroecology↔open-source reading.

  2. An IPES-Food “Head in the Cloud” reference added to the field guide’s critical voices or digital-ag enclosure axis — it is the most current (Feb 2026) critical paper naming open-source frameworks as a counter-current to digital enclosure in agrifood, and it names FarmOS/LiteFarm/Ugunduzi as existing open-source apps. This would connect the field guide’s digital-equity critical voice to the open-source infrastructure thread.

  3. A contested-claim entry — “Agroecology and open source are natural allies” — with the sub-domain-dependent verdict (strong at seed, fragile at machinery, contested at digital, absent at institutional vocabulary) drawn from the G-OSA-24 scan. This would extend the field guide’s contested-claims register with an agroecology-specific entry.

  4. A freshness tag on L’Atelier Paysan — the liquidation (April 2026) and successor-structure pledge to protect design assets from commercial appropriation is a moving part that should be re-verified within 12 months; the design-assets survival through liquidation is the live hinge.
