AGRIS Co-operative Ltd. is a 100%-farmer-owned grain marketing and farm-input supply cooperative serving 1,000+ farmer-owners across 14 locations in Chatham-Kent, Essex, and Middlesex counties, Ontario. “Bringing you what’s next, since 1921.”

AGRIS is a full-service provider of agricultural needs — seed, fertilizer, crop protection, grain handling, custom application — across its three counties. As a member of the GROWMARK FS System (the Ontario affiliate), AGRIS is part of the North American cooperative retail network (GROWMARK Inc., Illinois). The FS System “Connected” framing (GROWMARK SOURCE Spring 2025) names AGRIS specifically as a policy applicator — working “to ensure Ontario’s farmers have a voice in key policy decisions.”

Why AGRIS belongs in the field guide

AGRIS Co-operative is structurally important for three reasons the existing corpus only partially maps:

1. 50% JV partner of Haggerty Creek Ltd. — the operating entity that is the farm substrate of Innovation Farms Ontario and CAAIN §1.5’s autonomous manure robotics deployment. (See haggerty-creek-ltd.md for the full four-actor breakdown.) This makes AGRIS the only named farmer co-operative in the Canadian agrifood AI picture that is a deployer of CAAIN-funded autonomous robotics — not a funder, not a vendor, but a co-operative as the operating farm substrate.

2. Co-operative data-governance alternative. The Canadian farm-data-governance discussion in our corpus cites CCSC (U Saskatchewan, Murray Fulton et al. 2021, Digital Technologies and the Big Data Revolution in the Canadian Agricultural Sector, SSHRC + Future Skills funded) as the principal institutional voice of the co-operative alternative. The note “Voluntary codes of conduct have not been developed in Canada” is the structural argument. AGRIS Co-operative is operational evidence — 100%-farmer-owned, 105 years old (founded 1921), 1,000+ members, 14 locations, 50% owner of a CAAIN-deployer farm. The structural argument becomes concrete in this co-operative.

3. FS System as a North American reach. AGRIS’s GROWMARK affiliation connects southwestern Ontario agritech deployment to the wider FS System / GROWMARK network. Central Ontario FS (founded Sept 1, 2024, from two GROWMARK retail consolidations) is an adjacent sibling. The cooperative-retail layer is underrepresented in the corpus’s vendor-voice-heavy Canadian picture.

What AGRIS is doing in agrifood AI specifically

AGRIS does not appear as a vendor, a fund, or a research institution. It appears as the co-operative owner that anchors a chain of operational agritech decisions.

Co-operative data-governance: the principle vs. the practice

The CCSC (U Saskatchewan) framing of the co-operative alternative for farm data governance has been our structural anchor:

• Voluntary codes of conduct have not been developed in Canada (CCSC 2021).
• UK Farm Data Principles certification recommended (CAPI/EMILI ISED submission), not adopted in Canada.
• No Canadian farm-data-governance federal programme exists (G-314).

AGRIS Co-operative, as the operational example of the co-operative alternative, has not surfaced a public data-governance framework in primary sources we hold. Whether AGRIS’s data-licensing terms (including the AgExpert data backbone at Innovation Farms Ontario, used by Haggerty AgRobotics) follow co-operative principles is unverified in public sources. This is the substantive gap the corpus should track: the co-operative alternative is structurally available but not yet public. The Innovation Farms Ontario hub is the testing ground.

The 14-location, 1,000-farmer-owner footprint

The 14-location retail footprint is itself a deployment channel — any agritech product validated at Innovation Farms Ontario (Bothwell, in AGRIS territory) has downstream access to AGRIS’s 14 retail locations and 1,000 farmer-owner customer base. This is a commercialization pathway that vendor-led validation infrastructure does not have.

Why a co-operative as a deployer (not just a funder)

The Canadian agrifood AI picture has three actor archetypes:

1. Funders — federal (CAAIN, Scale AI, Digital, PIC, RAII, FCC) and provincial.
2. Vendors + founders — MacDon, Raven, P&P Optica, SomaDetect, Super GeoAI, CATTLEytics, mode40, etc.
3. Validators — smart farms, AIVA Network, Olds College, EMILI Innovation Farms.

AGRIS adds a fourth: 4. Co-operative deployer. A farmer-owned co-operative that is the operating entity on which vendor + funder activity is deployed. This is the missing structural piece in the Canadian picture, and the Innovation Farms Ontario architecture formalizes it.

Critical context

• AGRIS data-governance terms are not publicly disclosed. Whether co-operative principles apply to farm data generated on AGRIS-jurisdiction farms via Innovation Farms Ontario is unverified. G-316 already flags FCC AgExpert privacy; the AGRIS layer adds a co-operative-specific question.
• AGRIS is not a vendor. It is not an entity that buys or builds agritech. It is the owner-operator whose farm substrate other entities build on. This is the structurally distinctive posture.
• AGRIS is one of several FS System co-operatives in Ontario — Central Ontario FS (founded Sept 1, 2024) is a sibling GROWMARK affiliate. The full FS System Ontario map is worth a future corpus cell; this unit scopes to AGRIS because of the Haggerty / Innovation Farms Ontario connection.
• The 50% JV vs. 100% co-operative distinction. AGRIS is 100% farmer-owned; Haggerty Creek Ltd. is 50/50 Baresich family + AGRIS Co-operative. The co-operative principle applies to AGRIS’s operations and to AGRIS’s half-share of Haggerty Creek Ltd.; the Baresich family’s other 50% is private.
