Context

IEEE 2890-2025 is the world’s first global standard for provenance of Indigenous data. Approved September 10, 2025 by the IEEE SA Standards Board; published November 14, 2025 after a 5-year development process (PAR approval June 3, 2020). Operates as a Recommended Practice (industry specification, not binding regulation). Operationalises CARE Principles into industry specifications by detailing the process for describing and recording the provenance (origin and history of ownership) of data derived from Indigenous Peoples, lands, and waters. Critically: explicitly applies to AI/ML industries — per the IEEE Standards Association, the standard “enhances the integrity of that data, and the likelihood of engaged collaborations with data producers in ways that were previously unthinkable” within “data-generated industries, such as artificial intelligence and machine learning” (Udall Center event description, Feb 18, 2026 webinar).

Worth knowing because IEEE 2890-2025 is the operational implementation layer of the CARE Principles — moving from framework articulation to industry specification.
