Context

IEEE 2890-2025 is the world’s first global standard for provenance of Indigenous data. Approved August 2025 after a five-year development process. Operates as a Recommended Practice (industry specification, not binding regulation). Operationalises CARE Principles into industry specifications by detailing the process for describing and recording the provenance (origin and history of ownership) of data derived from Indigenous Peoples, lands, and waters.

Worth knowing because IEEE 2890-2025 is the operational implementation layer of the CARE Principles — moving from framework articulation to industry specification.
